The book, Ukraine: A War Crime, features 360 photographs and witness accounts by ninety-three photojournalists from 29 countries united to present their firsthand testimony about the Russian invasion of Ukraine from the perspective of those tasked with documenting it. In addition to providing intimate stories of what many Ukrainians endured, the book includes images on all aspects of the war from across Ukraine to draw a sweeping account of the destruction, the civilian toll of the war and the crimes committed on Ukrainian soil.

In this 2-day weekend workshop April 15 and 16 at the Bronx Documentary Center, you’ll learn to strengthen and heighten your ongoing projects with a variety of effective techniques. Photo editors Elizabeth Cheng Krist and Alice Gabriner have viewed and analyzed millions of images over their careers, and have worked for decades with a range of diverse photographers producing stories at publications, curating exhibits, and editing books.

Alice Gabriner’s long career at TIME, the Obama White House, National Geographic, The New York Times, and The New Yorker has given her a unique perspective on changes in the profession. She is currently a faculty member at The International Center of Photography (ICP).

Elizabeth Cheng Krist was a Senior Photo Editor with National Geographic magazine for over 20 years and is a founding member of the Visual Thinking Collective. She is on the boards of Women Photograph and the W. Eugene Smith Fund, and advises the Eddie Adams Workshop. Recently she has been working with CatchLight, Apple, and National Geographic again.

Nature Nurtures may be seen as a free-standing exhibition in Brooklyn Bridge Park during Photoville 2022, June 4-26. The exhibit features the work of 12 photographers who have documented how nature inspires and sustains them, brings solace to others, and is a powerful antidote to the stresses of contemporary life.

"During the isolation of the pandemic, it became clear to many that nature held a cure. Humans have recognized the healing effects of nature for centuries. In Japan, the government studied the therapeutic benefits of immersing ourselves in nature, which they called shinrin-yoku, or 'forest bathing.' Research has shown that regular exposure to nature can lower blood pressure, cortisol levels, anxiety, and can strengthen the immune system."

The Festival of Ethical Photography was born in 2010 in Lodi, Italy with the intention of focusing on ethical content of great relevance, bringing the general public closer to social issues.
The award will give attention to works focusing on people and their social or cultural stories; public or private, minor or crucial, major human tragedies or smaller daily life stories, changes and immutability. SIPA is one of the photo contests with the highest international participation. In this workshop, participants will gain insights from a diverse range of industry experts on advancing their project towards targeted presentation. This includes researching your topic and finding its audience, working to edit a project to its strengths and present it to potential venues, publishers, and other constituencies.
 
Author, educator, and mentor Mary Virginia Swanson will be the lead faculty member, presenting a series of illustrated lectures that will broaden your industry awareness on a range of key issues. Topics discussed include the evolving editorial market, the challenges to the traditional gallery market, identifying new buyers for fine prints and licensing rights, understanding exhibition venues to maximize opportunities, and the role publications can play in promoting your work. Additionally, she will meet with each participant to help identify appropriate audiences for their work and discuss how to effectively market to them.

At the start of the workshop, Swanson will be joined by award-winning photo editor Elizabeth Krist for a 2-day editing session of students’ work. Through classroom talks and interactive demonstrations, you will learn the nuances of editing your photographs. Krist will work with each participant to edit images brought to the workshop, helping you to reveal the heart of your project.

Presentations will focus on editorial skills such as building the elements of a visual narrative, researching and pitching story ideas, exploring your photographic identity, sustaining and editing long-term projects, marketing your abilities, and working with clients.
