Many aspects need to be considered when creating a book, from which photos to choose and how to create a coherent story, to how to sequence them and lay them out on the pages of your book.
This week-long workshop, hosted by The Raw Society in Menorca, Spain May 18-25, 2024 will guide participants through the process of creating your own book from an existing body of work. Workshop: Female Perspectives on Visual Storytelling

I am delighted to announce my first residential workshop for women photographers and editors called Female Perspectives on Visual Storytelling. From June 9 to June 16, 2024, we will gather at my home in Maine for a nourishing week of conversation, practice, and expert presentations designed to amplify your impact as visual storytellers. This will be part retreat and part working on the visual project of your choice.
Each day will offer focused presentations, editing, and group dialogue. Esteemed guest presenters Yunghi Kim, international photojournalist; Kathy Moran, former National Geographic magazine deputy director of photography; and Mary Virginia Swanson, author, educator, and advisor will provide perspectives and pivotal reflections from their years of leadership in our photography community. Bill Marr, former creative director of National Geographic and the Nature Conservancy, will join the group for a day to offer his expertise in editing and sequencing.
We invite applications from experienced female photographers and photo editors who can bring a visual project to be edited, reviewed, and discussed. Only nine applicants will be selected. One scholarship will be offered for this unique in-person experience. Selections will be based on the applicants’ experience, goals for the workshop, your project’s content, and the composition of the group. An early registration discount is available before February 1, 2024; the regular fee deadline is March 15, 2024

Please join the publisher of FotoEvidence books Svetlana Bachevanova, photo editor Sarah Leen and VII photographer Ziyah Gafic for a conversation about the 2023 FotoEvidence Book Award which is dedicated to the first year of the war in Ukraine. The book, Ukraine: A War Crime, features 360 photographs and witness accounts by ninety-three photojournalists from 29 countries united to present their firsthand testimony about the Russian invasion of Ukraine from the perspective of those tasked with documenting it. In addition to providing intimate stories of what many Ukrainians endured, the book includes images on all aspects of the war from across Ukraine to draw a sweeping account of the destruction, the civilian toll of the war and the crimes committed on Ukrainian soil.

During seven days in the beautiful Berkshires we will explore the concepts of storytelling from researching, photographing and editing your work. We will also explore the art of creating social media stories and narrative for IGTV. In this 2-day weekend workshop April 15 and 16 at the Bronx Documentary Center, you’ll learn to strengthen and heighten your ongoing projects with a variety of effective techniques. Each day will include both individually-focused mentoring and group critique. Photo editors Elizabeth Cheng Krist and Alice Gabriner have viewed and analyzed millions of images over their careers, and have worked for decades with a range of diverse photographers producing stories at publications, curating exhibits, and editing books.
Alice Gabriner’s long career at TIME, the Obama White House, National Geographic, The New York Times, and The New Yorker has given her a unique perspective on changes in the profession. She is currently a faculty member at The International Center of Photography (ICP).
Elizabeth Cheng Krist was a Senior Photo Editor with National Geographic magazine for over 20 years and is a founding member of the Visual Thinking Collective. She is on the boards of Women Photograph and the W. Eugene Smith Fund, and advises the Eddie Adams Workshop. Recently she has been working with CatchLight, Apple, and National Geographic again.

The non-profit media organization CatchLight will hold its 2023 Visual Storytelling Summit on the theme “The Change We Want to See” in San Francisco on Saturday, April 29, 2023. "During the isolation of the pandemic, it became clear to many that nature held a cure. Humans have recognized the healing effects of nature for centuries. In Japan, the government studied the therapeutic benefits of immersing ourselves in nature, which they called shinrin-yoku, or 'forest bathing.' Research has shown that regular exposure to nature can lower blood pressure, cortisol levels, anxiety, and can strengthen the immune system."

The World.Report Award / Documenting Humanity aims at a new form of social commitment through photography. The award is open to both professional and amateur photographers from all over the world. The Festival of Ethical Photography was born in 2010 in Lodi, Italy with the intention of focusing on ethical content of great relevance, bringing the general public closer to social issues. The award will give attention to works focusing on people and their social or cultural stories; public or private, minor or crucial, major human tragedies or smaller daily life stories, changes and immutability. Siena International Photo Awards is a photographic contest open to professional and non-professional photographers from all around the world. SIPA is one of the photo contests with the highest international participation. The 2019 edition received nearly 48.000 images from amateur and professional photographers from 156 countries worldwide. The winners will receive the Pangea Prize Crystal statuette during the Awards Ceremony which will be held in Siena in October as well as other cash and gear prizes.
